What is Sumi-e and why apply it to Concept Art?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"579\" data-end=\"870\"><strong>Sumi-e<\/strong> is characterised by the exclusive use of black ink on Japanese paper, valuing each stroke for its purity and expressiveness. Unlike denser media such as oil or acrylic, Sumi-e is committed to the economy of lines and the handling of negative space (the \u2018void\u2019).<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"872\" data-end=\"1184\">\n<li data-start=\"872\" data-end=\"959\">\n<p data-start=\"874\" data-end=\"959\"><strong>Control of the gesture:<\/strong> Each brushstroke must be sure, as it does not allow for corrections.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"960\" data-end=\"1075\">\n<p data-start=\"962\" data-end=\"1075\"><strong>Mind-hand connection:<\/strong> The preparation of the inkstone and the fluidity of the stroke promote concentration.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1076\" data-end=\"1184\">\n<p data-start=\"1078\" data-end=\"1184\"><strong>Sensitivity to space:<\/strong> Learning to \u2018draw with emptiness\u2019 strengthens composition and balance.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1186\" data-end=\"1352\">For a Concept Art artist, mastering Sumi-e means improving the ability to synthesise forms and generate more expressive sketches in the early stages of a project.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1359\" data-end=\"1402\"><strong>2. Structure of the four-day workshop<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1404\" data-end=\"1581\"><strong>Our four-day intensive course<\/strong> is designed to combine individual practice with a collective project.
